The construction of Indiana University began in 1822 in what is known as Seminary Square Park. Construction was completed and classes began in 1825. The first professor was a man by the name of Baynard Hall. During its first year, there were only 12 students enrolled in the school, and the students graduated in 1830.

Growth for Indiana University was slow, but by 1851, the university had almost 100 students and seven professors. Nevertheless, over the years, Indiana University saw significant growth, and during 1902, the school had more than 1,000 students.
