History of Ellettsville

The first people to arrive and settle in the area that is known as Ellettsville today were a man by the name of Edward Ellet, his wife Eleanor and four of his sons. They arrived in 1837 and built a small log cabin to live in. The following year, Ellet's three other sons, three daughters and their spouses settled in the area as well.

In 1820, the family named their little town Ellettsville and began construction of a courthouse and a small school. With the discovery of limestone in Ellettsville, the town saw amazing growth. During these early years, Ellettsville was primarily dependent on its limestone industry.

Today, Bybee Stone Company still creates amazing limestone works within its mill. In fact, it was Bybee Stone Company that provided the stones necessary to rebuild the Pentagon after the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001. As such, the town's motto was appropriately designated as "Builders of American History."
